The dark measurements are innacurate and slow, plus the consistency across different panel types (VA, TN, IPS, OLED) varies HEAVILY. With the Spyder5 i discovered the display is not even capable enough to measure VA panel black levels. Imo they're even too inaccurate for hobbyist-level calibration.
If you're trying to calibrate you want consistent results, which the DataColor devices just don't offer.

The only software i can think of that's better is the paid (and extremely expensive) Portrait Displays CalMan software. Most of these points also apply to the non-plus version.ĭispla圜al is about the best overall software. And it can measure all the way down to 0 nits, also bringing up accurate measurements of high-contrast displays like VA and OLED. The measurements are significantly faster than the Spyder5, taking down the time to calibrate or recalibrate a monitor from around 1 hour to around 10-15 minutes. Different display panel types end up looking the same when calibrated to the same values. (I got the Plus version because i also have HDR displays where brightness goes above 1000 nits, plus it takes measurements even faster than the non-plus). But the accuracity also suffered from the Spyder5's problems in darker colors.Īll of these problems were completely solved when i got my i1Display Pro Plus. The only displays where the calibrated results were somewhat consistent and decent were VA panels in terms of color tint. Most TN type panels i tried to calibrate ended up with a strong green tint, most IPS panels with a yellow tint, most OLED panels had their gamma completely botched and the black levels were basically raised to what the colorimeter can measure (plus a purple tint for very dark grays).
In the end you can calibrate 5 different displays to the same standards but all the displays will look completely different. I have experience with both the DataColor Spyder 5 and the i1Display Pro Plus: What kind of speed difference are we talking about? I don't really know how long a calibration typically takes. Hmm, given that it'll involve astronomical images dark colours would be rather relevant. I was planning to use the Displa圜AL software, which people seem pretty happy about, so the vendor-specific software quality doesn't really matter to me. I'm all for buying quality (no offense to Datacolor :P). I've read mixed opinions about the Spyder ones, saying that they are not as good as X-Rite, not as flexible/"future proof" regarding screen types and also specifically for print? Is the X-Rite one worth the extra dough? It'll take some extra saving, but if that's a clear better choice then so be it. The ones I can easily get a hold of are:Įven though choice is limited, suggestions are welcome and I can check myself if I can get them here reasonably. To my surprise, the hardware seems rather difficult to find in my country.

They're all your garden variety TN, VA or IPS panels and an OLED, though I'm not sure if I should touch that last one without the proper professional equipment. This is not for true hardcore professional use, just to get decent accuracy across my devices to the extent possible. Therefore, I'm interested in calibrating my stuff. My laptop's screen seems to be pretty close to the physical print, but it has made me realise that even screens that are miles off look just fine to the untrained eye. A while ago I designed something for print and realised my monitors are absolute garbage when it comes to colour accuracy.
